Three oldies with such a life ahead
What is in the bottle
Dry white wine . Tres Vellas 2020
Elaboration area
Padriñan, Pontevedra, Galicia . Val do Salnés area
Suitable for
Albariño lovers, you have to try this wonderful curiosity, if you can find it… because it is becoming a real unicorn (only 1093 bottles)
Viticulture and vinification
100% Albariño . 12.50% Alc. Vol. . Three old vines plots with 80 years the youngest, some even exceeding a hundred, in the Salnés Valley area, Galician coast . 1st Simes: high area of the valley 130m, provides acidity, decomposed granite soil (xabre). 2nd Villalonga: low area of the valley -Ría de Arousa-, provides salinity due to its fogs and soil mixture of clay and xabre . 3rd Padriñas: Sanxenxo area, 20m from the Pontevedra estuary, provides volume, xabre soils
Each “Vella” (old lady in Galician) plot is vinified separately with minimal intervention . Whole cluster pressing (helps to keep the high acidity), spontaneous fermentation, partial malolactic (not usual in Spanish white wines, it is done so that the high acidity is not aggressive) and ageing ten months in used French oak on its lees (lees give volume and longevity to the wine) . The three wines are then blended for two months before bottling to remain a year and a half “sleeping” prior to its release to the market
Tasting notes
Intense citrus, stone fruit and toasted bread aromas . Same in the mouth, volume (that sensation of flavorful permanence) and a fantastic freshness thanks to its salinity and acidity
Winery hints
@pedro_mendezb winegrower, winemaker and restaurant owner @acasapequena – a rustic village tapería – . Pedro last name is linked closely to the Albariño of Salnés area . Pedro’s resumee began in 2007 as a winemaker in the valley . After a five-year hiatus in the world of wine, he returns home to stay . In 2015 he entrusted himself with the wonderful mission of recovering old abandoned vineyards, producing his first vintage in 2018 . Las Tres Vellas arrived two years later with much pampering, patience, and success . Lucky those of us who have tasted and have some bottles, because the “Vellas” have a lot of life left to say
Pairing
Navajas (seafood) . Pulpo a feira (octopus in Galician style – boiled potatoes and red pepper )
