A cult wine
What is in the bottle
Red dry wine . Torbreck The Laird Shiraz 2013 . The Laird is a Scottish term, which refers to the lord of a manor
Elaboration area
Gnadenfrei Plot, Marananga, West Barossa Valley, Barossa, South Australia . This plot was acquired by Torbreck in 2013, after 10 years of collaboration with Seppelt family, one of the well-known names in the area
Suitable for
For Shiraz, or Syrah, lovers, the most curious and demanding ones
Viticulture and vinification
Shiraz 100% . 15.00% Vol. Alc. . Single vineyard Shiraz, from one of the best ones in Barossa Valley, Gnadenfrei, the envy of many winemakers in the area . Planted in 1958 in dark clayey soils with reddish layers, and limestone, it gives away small and highly concentrated berries . Manually cared,
gives very low yields of excellent quality . The 2013 vintage was one of the driest, hottest, and earliest that can be remembered in the area, obtaining a high alcoholic degree, masterfully balanced
Tasting notes
Intense dark ruby color . Very deep on the nose with black licorice, ripe plum, black olive, and bakery hints . Idem in the mouth, with acidity fully balanced with its tannins . This wine is aged for 36 months in the “magic cask” of the prestigious Burgundy cooperage, Dominique Laurent, whose particularity is that its staves are twice as thick as normal ones . An excellent wine, within all details
Winery things
The name of Torbreck refers to a Scottish forest where the founder, Dave Powell, worked as a lumberjack during his youth . After dropping out of economics, with no background in wine business, he worked in different wine regions around the world until he settled in Marananga, Barrosa Valley, where he discovered and rescued old vineyards, creating his own style of wines that has become a world reference
Pairing
Roast Beef or just a glass by the chimney or in the terrace
